The Soft Miniaturised Underground Robotic Finders (SMURF) can autonomously travel over debris and penetrate into dense rubble to detect signs of human presence using chemical sensors. The equipped video and audio sensors helps to identify the location of victims and to communicate with them. It is a part of the CURSOR Search and Rescue Kit, which also includes different types of drones. The SMURF robots are a novel technology developed by the CURSOR project, a collaborative research initiative funded by the European Union and the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
